I have guests arriving next week – my sister, her husband and my three beautiful nieces and nephew! We are so excited to have them come visit!
I’m wondering how can I best receive them? Now in an ideal world, we would have a lovely big spare room with an ensuite bathroom for our guests to comfortably stay. The reality is that we have a sofa bed in a small room at the back of the house, that’s currently used as a bit of a multipurpose space.

We’re expats, so tend to have a lot of people coming to visit, so I think it’s about time that I start to work on this area! The best place to start for me is always with a list. This is what I’ve come up with to best transform our multipurpose space into a warm inviting guest room:
The basics:
A bed with beautiful linen, fluffy duvet and pillows
A bedside table with lamp
Water carafe and glass
A selection of magazines and coffee table books
Somewhere to hang and store folded clothes
Fluffy towels
An extra blanket
Extras:
Bath robe
Slippers
Towel drying rack
Mirror
Small jar of cookies or snacks
Fresh flowers
Ear plugs (a necessity at our house with three young children!)
Extravagance:
Boutique chocolates
A toiletry gift pack and guest toothbrush
MP3 compatible sound system
A tablet with movies preloaded

Okay so I can’t get everything just now, perhaps I’ll work on it over time – but it’s always nice to dream isn’t?
Do you have anything to add to the list – practical or down right extravagant? I’d love to read about it in the comments!
Have a great day and see you Friday!
Hi Mel, we have a sofa bed in our study which doubles as a guest room when people visit. I like having a nice meal prepared and some nice sheets on the bed..beautiful tulips and I’m sure the wooden table is the same as ours which I bought in Oxford Street, Sydney years ago. Catherine x
Hi Mel, we are currently doing up our spare room so your post is perfect timing and has given me some great ideas (we also just have a sofa bed in a multi-purpose room at the back of the house!). Your’s sounds like a 5* hotel to me :-)
Thanks everyone! Anna (and take note sis), this is kind of a work in progress for me – currently at the basics level!
super great. i love when people take the time to make their guests feel comfortable. i love doing that for my guests. Teri
Looking forward to the extravagance, but will be delighted just with the company xxx
Mel you blog is coming on fantastically-I love it! Will bookmark it to make sure I pop in more regularly! :-) your comment to me ended up in spam and I just found it-sorry and thanks a million for your comment. I adore your blog graphics and layout by the way-so clever. :-)
Sounds waaay too inviting. I’m on the next cruise ship over (still don’t like flying!) ;)
