Last night saw the long anticipated Ponsonby Central launch in Auckland, a complex housing a produce market, street food, eateries, bars and homewares. It’s been done with impeccable taste, keeping the best of the warehouse it once was with large open beam ceilings, painted industrial pipes and a metal walkway bridge with each of the stores having their own individual stylish fit-outs.
As a Ponsonby local, I feel pretty lucky to have this so close to me. The venue will bring a little Europe to the area and it kind of reminds me of my old local market, Place des Carmes in Toulouse France; an indoor marketplace surrounded by restaurants and eateries in the heart of the town. I look forward to once again swinging a basket over my shoulder and heading up the road to stock up on fresh offerings for the evening’s meal.
Along with the produce market, the complex hosts quality eateries and street food in The Lane that runs between Richmond Rd and Brown Street along with wine bars. The front houses retail space, Zoo Warehouse and Wallace Cotton.
The event was run in association with Saben and they have a pop-up store at Ponsonby Central for the next couple of weeks. Last night they unveiled their stunning new collection, Portraits of Style with a very cool photographic exhibition of bloggers, designers, personalities and fashionistas carrying a bag to fit who they really are.
Ponsonby Central will be officially open this weekend with the fresh food market opening Saturday December 1.

I’ve been to Ponsonby and love it there. I didn’t know you lived near there. This new section looks great and I hope to get back there someday.
It’s great Teri! Make sure you look me up if you come back:) Mel x
How wonderful Mel-you are very lucky to have this so near!:-)
Thanks Caroline and Catherine, we’re very lucky! @Catherine – yes us Australians find it hard to admit but they are definitely ahead of us in the food stakes;)
What a cool crowd! Food has always been wonderful in NZ, so lovely for you to be able to walk here for shopping.. We went to NZ for our honeymoon 21 years ago & I remember Ponsonby Road was the first place I’d seen muffins in a cafe. A while later cafes in Australia caught on. Thinking of you as I’m watching Raymond Blanc: A Very Hungry Frenchman – he’s gone back to his hometown, the food is just divine. My dad was sick but thankfully he’s on the mend. Catherine xx
