When we rented our villa in Auckland, one of the things that I fell in love with immediately in the house was the open shelving in the kitchen. I’ve always been a fan of open shelves, I think it gives a kitchen, a room that can quite often look sterile, a bit of life.
I have to admit that while I was planning our kitchen when we renovated our Sydney apartment, I stayed clear of it even though I loved the look because of my fear of how dirty everything gets. So here was my chance to experience it, and a year later I have to say it’s pretty easy to maintain and I wouldn’t hesitate to do it in our next place.
On Friday night, after enjoying a meal with Annie and her husband Georges, Annie and I made our way into the kitchen and started throwing ideas of how I could change things around and before we knew it, we where standing on chairs cleaning and rearranging everything – at midnight I might add. Is that a female thing to do? I find myself doing crazy things like that at the most unlikely hour and I wonder if I’m the only one? Anyway, the end result is this and I thought I’d take a photo the next morning to share it with you, before it gets too “lived in”.
See you Wednesday!

Yes I find when you have children you don’t get time to yourself often to focus on doing little things like that. I love open shelving as well, it looks lovely and makes accessing things so easy.
Hi Catherine. Oh time… yes that’s another story:) Mel x
Mel-that’s exactly what I do!! Open shelving-love it too. Not enough of it in my kitchen-yet…! X
@Genie – I wonder why that doesn’t happen for me? That’s exactly what I thought would though, I don’t even have an exhaust – perhaps it’s that? x
@Hege – Thank you – Yes it was fun, a glass of wine in hand helped;) x
@Anastasia – I guess everything gets used so much minus the bottles and perhaps the tagine that perhaps that’s why it doesn’t get as dusty as I thought.. x
@Caroline – I’m in good company:) M x

I like the idea of open shelving, especially if you’ve got lovely things to display and not much stuff, But we have 2 rows of open shelving in your kitchen and I find everything up there gets really greasy. If I want to use anything from those shelves, they have to be washed before use. I wonder if there’s anything that can be done about that?
Oh yes I recognise those gorgeous shelves! :-) I love the way they are built in around the tiled splashback and you’e done a fab job of the styling, including the benchtop! x
Thanks Michelle x
Love it :) I like your idea of the Nespresso vase :)
@ Marie, yes an old Ikea vase is the perfect size! M x
