Ceramics Handpicked

I could never tire of handmade ceramics, used as a stand alone decorative piece or to serve food and drink, it’s without saying that ceramics with their slight imperfections that make them even more aesthetically beautiful, have made a big come back in the last few years.

I’ve selected some that have caught my eye of late to showcase here, I hope that you love them as much as I do.

1. Ceramic Vessels by Sarah Backler 

Tauranga based industrial designer and ceramic artist, Sarah Backler has created a lovely range of hand cast porcelain vessels that would make the most gorgeous vases. I look forward to seeing more from this talented New Zealand artist.

2. Tall Yunomi Vessel
Light Blue

I love the tone of the glazing of this vessel. It’s made in Japan and reminds me of some of the ceramics my mother owned when I was a young girl. This photo of it with the wild flower arrangement is striking and a perfect representation of how it deserves to be shown.

3. Dip Cups by Up in the Air Somewhere

I’ve been a long admirer of this ceramics brand that comes out of Chicago. I drink most of my tea and coffee out of mugs with no handles, I love the comforting feeling of holding it in my two hands. While I haven’t gone crazy with the dipped trend, I like how it’s done here, mixed with the imperfections of the handmade cups.

4. Gold Lip Platter by Up in the Air Somewhere

I can’t get enough serving plates and some of them need to look just that little bit special. The gold on the uneven lip would make anything served up on it look simply delicious.

5. La Chamba Round Platter

I adore the look and feel of these earthy dishes. Rich in history, each are made by hand in South America using traditional techniques that go back centuries and would make a perfect addition to an eclectic table setting.

6. American Modern Vegetable Dish
Teal

I love the form and colour of this serving dish. Designed by Russel Wright, a well regarded American industrial designer during the 1920’s- 60’s. Some of his work has now been re-issued by Bauer Pottery in Los Angeles, including this one.

7. Gidon Bing Pitcher

I’ve wanted to own some of Gidon’s ceramics since I arrived in NZ, so I think it’s about time I make that move. This pitcher is exquisite and quite often something like this would be left on display which of course is should, but it also calls to be used and I could just imagine it placed on a summer table setting..

8. Large Ceramic Bowl by Stephen Brabourne

Function does not override beauty with New Zealand ceramic and glass artist, Stephen Bradbourne’s work.  This bowl is individually thrown and would be the perfect salad or fruit bowl.
