Tiles and mosaics are no longer destined for the walls of kitchens and bathrooms, not now that celebrated designers Paola Navone and Marcel Wanders have collaborated with Bizazza for their 2014 collection.
The first, Paola Navone’s decorative mosaic entitled, “Affresco” is an exotic jaw dropper. Three of the four mosaics uses the same bright floral motif in full or mixed with the geometrics, giving you room to play and to create your own unique wall.
Her second contribution, “Halo Halo” includes nine tiles with graphic black motifs on white which I really look forward to seeing pop up in the homes of the glamorous in Pinterest in the coming year. I think if I were to renovate a home right now, you’d see these tiles gracing my entry.
I’ve enjoyed watching the metal pressed ceilings from the past recreated with wallpaper. Marcel Wanders has gone a step further and created a decorative hexagonal ceramic tile in black and white monochrome entitled “frozen garden”. The black tile gives such a dramatic look to this room but I do wonder whether it would make its way into real homes. I like to think some would be adventurous enough though. The white, a little easier to use for the bathroom yet still giving such a dramatic edge.
There’s so much focus on the wall at the moment and although I have to say I’m a white wall girl at heart, it really isn’t getting any attention in the design world these days, nope it’s all about dark and moody or a whole lot of fun.
What do you think about tiled walls outside of the kitchen and bathroom? When the time comes for a change, it would most certainly be a really big deal, no doubt with a mini jack-hammer and re-plastering of walls in need. But you know, some things are just worth it in the name of beauty…

I’m a great Paola Navone and Marcel Wanders fan… what a fantastic collaboration.
I’m loving all of it, but could I live with it for a foreseeable amount of time…probably not.
How great though for restaurants, hotels and for interiors where people have the luxury to re-decorate when the mood takes them.
There’s something so ‘grown up’ about walls like these…. reminds me of our house in the 70’s x
Agree, it would be a wild thing to do, I look forward to seeing if it takes off in residential homes… and I’d LOVE to see your 70’s home. M x
Big time for wall tiles now. The more we get them to see, the earlier we’ll think of the possibility of adapting to other rooms than kitchen and bathroom only. For me, it depends all on the design. It has to be something I can live with without getting tired after 3 month. What I cherish about me painted walls though is the ability of hanging art there. But then those kind of walls are already art! :-) xx
Oh yes, didn’t think about the art on the wall, a necessity in our house! … But a statement wall would be something. I really like the mosaics that Paola Navone came up with and how we can make it a little ours…
