Today, please welcome Kelly Gibney of the Kiwi food blog, Bonnie Delicious as my 5 Food Questions guest. I totally admire Kelly’s approach to food, she is a lover and advocate of whole food and shares delicious and (mostly) guilt free recipes that she’s created with her readers. While that’s her love and main aim, she is by no means rigid with her approach and her love of good food doesn’t stop her from exploring all of the tastes on offer from time to time. I think she’s hit a nice balance and secretly wish that I could do the same. Kelly has worked most of her adult life internationally in the food industry; she describes this as her “seedbed for her food passion”. Today, alongside looking after her young daughter and authoring the Bonnie Delicious blog, she organises feasts at The Golden Dawn, which is a bit of an institution here in Auckland and has recently opened a seasonal coffee shop repurposed from a shipping container. In the next couple of weeks Kelly, along with another foodie, Delaney Mes from Heartbreak Pie, will be cooking up something really special for Auckland’s very first Kinfolk Meal at the beautiful Indie Home Collective, which was sold out, mind you within hours of going live.
Over to you Kelly…
Do you mind sharing your earliest food memory?
My little sister and I used to play “cooking show” after school in our kitchen. We were 10 & 8 years old. We’d pre chop lots of things into little bowls and we’d cook and chat to the window like it was a camera. I can vividly remember our finest dishes: Stuffed jacket potatoes, macaroni cheese and cornflake truffles. We used to have an absolute ball.
Where do you source most of your produce?
I’m lucky that in my neighbourhood I have an amazing bulk food / health food store – Bulk Food Savings (just off Dominion Rd in Sandringham) and I live pretty close to the awesome Wesley Community Centre green markets that happen on Tuesdays and Fridays in Mt Roskill. Between these two wonderful suppliers I get a lot of what I need and like to cook with. I really LOVE shopping at Farro Fresh too. It’s dangerous to visit. I always leave with a ton more than I’d intended to buy.
Slow or fast cooking?
Slow cooking all the way. I cannot resist a slow braise.
If you had the chance to prepare a meal for a celebrity or someone in the know, who would it be?
Can I be cheeky and say three?… Nigel Slater. I’m a nerdy super fan. I think he’s amazing. Second would be Alice Waters who owns Chez Panisse in Berkley, California. She’s incredibly inspiring, has helped pioneer edible schoolyard projects and her approach to food is exquisite. Finally just because I wouldn’t be able to resist the opportunity: Nigella Lawson. I’m super curious about what she’s really like. I think that’d be a fun table!
A good meal….
… is shared with pals or family, enjoyed at a leisurely pace, involves delicious food served family style and most definitely includes some delicious organic wine.
Thank you so much for being my guest today Kelly and for your lovely answers and images!

you too Caroline!
Hello Mel and Kelly.
Kelly is a woman after my own heart!
I can tell you that Nigel Slater is super nice and rather shy (we sometimes shop at the same place) and that Nigella Lawson is even more beautiful in real life. Hope this helps towards the dream dinner.
Mel, hope that you managed to get a ticket for the Kinfolk feast and ladies, it’s slow cooking all the way!
Great post! Thank you x
Oh Tina you really do mix in high places! I think you’ve got a few stories to tell… You’ll love all of Kelly’s gluten free recipes! M x
Ok, that comes in so handy. I am tired of my recipes and need some inspiration these days. Will hop over and see if a try out something new still this week. Thank you , Mel! And Kelly, your photography is just my style! xx
Hi Mel and Kelly,
Ok, I am so hungry now after reading this gorgeous post! Everything looks absolutely delicious and the memories of food for Kelly took me back to my childhood too. I love macaroni and cheese and even to this day I make it once a week. Jacket potatoes weren’t something I knew about until I moved to England and I adore those as well. I am a big fan of slow cooking too, the slower the better. I really enjoyed this post, thank you for sharing! Jocelyn x x
Aren’t they the sweetest memories? Mac and cheese is such a comfort food in the States, my step-mother who is American makes it all the time. xx
