Leading on from last week’s post about buying for a purpose and with a conscience, over the coming months I will feature some beautifully made and timeless Scandinavian design, a lot of it I had the pleasure of viewing at the Stockholm Furniture Fair. I will kick it off with Skagerak, a Danish company that has been designing furniture for over forty years and over this time, accumulating many industry awards. Putting their history and accolades aside, true to a lot of Scandinavian style, their products are all about form and function, with of course, great design. Skagerak’s motto is “design for generations” meaning that not only do they create beautiful product, they also take quality and sustainability very seriously.

Here is a glimpse of some of their exquisite designs:

I am currently in need of a versatile side table and the simple elegance of the Brut Table above really speaks to me. I love the clean lines, the slate grey colour and the brass details for the feet.

Wall shelving or wall anything in fact is still very huge, I saw a lot of it at the trade fair. Somehow I just can’t imagine it ever going out of style now, it’s so practical and looks great. My picks would be the Kuvert Shelf, a gorgeous way to store the daily mail or to use as simple magazine storage and Wire Shelf as a stand alone or grouped together as shown to minimally show off your treasured objects.

Furniture should be multi-purposed, the dining chair needn’t always sit around a table and a hall side table doubles for a bedside table. It’s about repurposing to fit into different homes or times in your life. I’ve found personally that it’s items like this that are the keepers. Not only are they practical, it allows you to rearrange and give a refresh to the home without the added expense.

All of their products are so well considered. I love how they’ve balanced that minimal Scandinavian design with a warm and inviting feeling. The images are truly dreamy and I could imagine it all in my home couldn’t you? Do you have any favourites here? This was just a taste of Skagerak’s beautiful designs. Make sure you pop over to their site to get the full picture.

I’m off to Berlin tomorrow for four days all alone with Guillaume.  It’s been a couple of years since we went away without the children and I can’t wait to discover the museums, cafes and boutiques! It’s going to be a weekend of immersing ourselves in culture with no distractions. I’ll be sharing parts of it on Instagram Stories so if you don’t follow me already, you can find me here.

Much love,

Mel xx
