If there’s one book title that resinates with me in my discovery of New Zealand, it’s Simon Farrell-Green’s “Food Heroes – Celebrating New Zealand’s Artisan Producers and Growers”.
Food wise, living in New Zealand is a lot like when I was living in France. There is an abundance of real food here and you quite often get the chance to meet the people behind it and taste the love that they put in to it.
Before moving here from Australia, I had heard people speak of this, but I’m little embarrassed to admit, I didn’t pay too much attention. Now after experiencing it first hand, I want to scream it out to the world: This little country is doing incredible things with food!
Food Heroes celebrates this and tells you the story behind the food, Simon travelled around the two islands to speak to the producers whom he describes as “countercultural and changing the way we eat”. I enjoy Simon’s style of writing and actually felt like I was there with him chatting to the artisans and growers.
Coupled with Duncan Innes’ photography that captures the people and country beautifully, this book is a lovely coffee table book to own.

Oh wow-how things have moved on since I was in NZ in 96. So much inspiration on your side of the world! Funnily enough I was trying to track down a long lost cousin in NZ last week-since my Dad died I have no names apart form Monkowitz to go by and as my cousin is female and probably married, it just isn’t going to happen-all I know is that she was editor at Cleo mag in the 90s…!!! Still, it’s fun looking :-) x

What a fantastic book. Are you going to the event? I’d be there in a hearbeat if I lived in Auckland, Yes you are so lucky to have access to such wonderful food artisans and produce there in NZ. I love reading New Zealand’s Cuisine Magazine, always full of creative and beautiful food, photographs and recipes.
