On a recent trip to France, Guillaume returned home with a handful of precious plates and bowls from his Grandmother’s house. I really like the mix of styles he chose, they look fantastic together the way they clash.
We pull them out often when entertaining and serve pretty much anything on them and it really dresses up the table and brings a story to the conversation. They also work really well beside contemporary designs; we’ve got an Alessi Babyboop, hors-d’oeuvre set along with modern bowls.
All of that aside, it feels great to use them and to have her in our everyday lives when she’s so far away. So if you haven’t already done so, raid your grandparent’s or parent’s china cabinet or head down to your local vintage shop. You don’t have to go all vintage, just one or two is a nice touch, experiment with the different designs and don’t always go for the obvious.

The plates are beautiful Mel. I love the idea of using mismatched plates and I find it reminds me to keep the food simple and unfussy – like the classic melon and prosciuttio – which is always best and looks perfect on china like this.
