Your Home & Garden Magazine | Photo by Larnie Nicolson & production LeeAnn Yare

If you follow me on Facebook and Instagram then this is probably of no surprise to you that my home has been featured in the January 2014 issue of Your Home & Garden magazine here in New Zealand. I’m feeling rather excited by it all and I figured that you’d like to join my joy and see a selection of the photos from the spread. Am I right?

Larnie Nicolson took the photos and LeeAnn Yare did the production and words. I have to say that I’m so happy with the end result! Both were non obtrusive and completely respected our style and other than moving a couple of things around and a little bit of fluffing, it’s very true to how our home is, albeit a few less toys on the ground and papers piled high on the kitchen bench! LeeAnn wrote a lovely article, a nice record for Guillaume and me to keep, so I do hope that if you’re in New Zealand, you pick up a copy of the magazine and have a read and see the rest of the photos!

After moving to Auckland as expats and coming from our apartment in Sydney that we’d fully renovated ourselves, finding a good rental was a difficult task, especially when we were looking in very specific areas. We fell in love with that bungalow in Grey Lynn straight away, I loved the character features and that it was opposite the park but we still had to work within the constraints of a home not owned by us so we had our challenges, one of them was that it was quite dark and could have done with a good lick of paint! While we’re all happily settled into our new home, when I look at these photos I have to say that I feel rather nostalgic, as we really enjoyed living there.

I think it’s a refreshing change to see rental properties in magazines and how people make something temporary their home, and while I know it’s common in Europe, you don’t see it often enough on this side of the world. So I hope that we’ll see more of this in the future.

Enjoy the photos by Larnie Nicolson; you should pop over to her site to check out her other work. LeeAnn Yare is not only an interiors writer but she has a cool decor shop in Auckland called Collected and a facebook page full of interior inspiration. The talented duo has just recently released a book, New Zealand Interior Style.

Have a great weekend friends!

Hi Mel! Congratulations!! Sorry for taking so long to comment (crazy busy). I did see it in print and loved it! Great to see you’ve shared it on your blog and it’s also nice to read all the wonderful comments. Larnie captured your style and relaxed family vibe beautifully! x

Such a lovely home Mel – came here via Blogging Your Way but am also a fellow Kiwi. Completely agree with your comments on rental properties in magazines. Making a place home and treating a place with love, care and respect, even if you don’t own it, is a wonderful thing to do and inspiring to others. Often homemaking is thought of as a future thing when renting.

Can I ask where you got the bunk beds, lantern lights and red rug from?

    Thank you!

Thanks Rachel! I’m glad you agree with me. Here’s hoping we see more! I got the bunk beds from Urban Kids in Devonport, the rugs at irugs.co.nz and the lantern light in the boys room from Ikea and the table one in the girls room from Ikea also. Mel xx

Cool bunk beds are hard to find here, so sad considering how many amazing options there are in Europe:( you can get bargains on irugs – we got pure wool and have been really happy. Good luck with the hunting. Urban kids are online:)

Mel, the piece is such a wonderful credit to you, you’ve created such a beautiful space. It feels relaxed, welcoming and still so stylish. And I’m quite envious of the light that is flooding in, we’re into winter now here and the days are short and some days it doesn’t feel like the sun gets up at all…craving the light. Well done Mrs xx

Ah thanks Amy! Well I have to say that that stream of light was the only one there for the day and lasted a whole 5 minutes. Larnie had the worst light to work with, it’s a dark house anyway and then we had weeks of dark rainy weather so had to grab the opportunity when we had it. But I know what you mean, winter just doesn’t do it for me! M xx

Lovely home Mel. I especially love your rug under the dining table. How does it hold up with kids? It’s always something I have avoided to do until now when I see what the floor ends up looking like after every meal.
Am I correct or is that a true German biergarten bench and table you are sitting at in the garden?

    1. mel

Hi Corinne! Oh the rug, it is looking a little dirty when you look close but I started putting it under when there wasn’t a huge amount of mess! I do always have a handheld vacuum on hand for after meals. Yes it’s a true German beer table, a gorgeous shop here in Auckland, The Vitrine brought a bunch into the country, we love it. M xx

Congratulations, it’s a wonderful experience, I have had my home featured in a magazine as well and am wondering wether to post this on my blog, but let me ask you do you feel that exposing your home like this is a bit of a privacy issue, for me it brings a sense of insecurity, that’s why I hesitate. Amazing photos and light, again congratulations! xo
