There’s no doubt here that New Zealand Interior Designer, Alex Fulton isn’t afraid of colour. The use of a good dose of hue is also coupled with Alex’s ability to use clash to perfection, pulling off what most would be terrified to attempt. The result; a fun home that is true to her style, tells a story about who lives there and is a visual playground for the rest of us that demands respect. Her home has graced many magazines and most recently has been featured in the just released, New Zealand Interior Style written by LeeAnn Yare and photography by Larnie Nicolson. I’m so pleased to have Alex here today to answer my 5 Decorating Questions!
Over to you Alex…
How would you describe your style?
I’m most definitely a maximalist. I get fast heartbeats from combining colours and design in unexpected ways – I’m always experimenting and looking for new ways to combine these two elements.
What has been your best decorative find or purchase?
Anything that produces light. Lighting is often ignored or forgotten but it’s such a beautiful element that can make or break a room. My current no.1 is my orange Tom Dixon Jack light that sits in our hallway. I love that it makes a statement when it’s on and off.
Do you have advice for people who aren’t confident to decorate their home?
Yes, not surprisingly I do! Decorate for yourself. It’s ok to get ideas from other people’s homes but ultimately you have to design your spaces to suit you and your family’s lifestyle. Surround yourself with objects, colours and things you love. Forget ‘rules’ and ‘trends’ and listen to that little design voice inside – mine is annoyingly vocal!
Okay I had to…! White walls or coloured?
Can I choose both? Walls are quite simply my favourite part of a house. I quite often start off with white walls when I first move into a house then I start adding from there. I am loving half and half walls at the moment as well as finding clever and cheap solutions to plain walls e.g. putting black dot stickers onto a plain painted wall. Paint and wallpaper are my friends. I also love using walls to display stuff – garlands, kids art, calendars, curiosities, collections… Walls are underrated and underused – I say let’s get stuff on them!
Home….
…. is an extension of your personality. A place where you can feel 100% you. A place to surround yourself with things, enjoy your family and friends and share moments in.
Thank you so much for being my guest today and for sharing your helpful tips Alex!

I think me and Alex could totally be best friends! I love her use of color and I spy quite a collection of West German Pottery ;) This house makes me happy!
Hi Maggie:) Yes ‘happy’ is the word for her. It’s always interesting how people who love and embrace colour are always so happy. Alex pulls it off so well! M x

Interesting observation when she said ‘ Walls are underrated and underused ‘. I have started a Pinterest board myself about walls and there it is: as an inspiration source meant to be but I haven’t done anything with it. Good moment of reflection!
Ha! Love it Gudy:) M x

This is one fun-loving woman! A gorgeous blue-and black is a goodie. I’m hoping to do one black wall in the kitchen and our windowless shower room is already black! Great series Mel! xx
