preparing the plants in the spring

Two lovely bloggers, Catherine and Anastasia and I thought it might be nice to post today on springtime in our city. I had the grand plan to go to the Britomart Farmers Market this Saturday. Even with the ominous looking clouds and a bad weather report, I still went and sure enough, when I arrived, the grey clouds finally gave away and the rain came down in bucket loads. Not exactly my kind of spring and nor the lovely weather that we’ve been experiencing in Auckland of late. So instead, feeling housebound much of the weekend, I began to dream about spring.

Terrace

The feelings I have are unique to Auckland and my life here. Because it tends to rain a lot in the wintertime, we spend much more time indoors so when the month of September arrives and the rain starts to ease, we are so ready to jump outside and enjoy the great outdoors.

The first thing we’re so excited to do, is to bring our terrace back to life. Seedlings are planted and established plants get a little more nurturing, all in preparation of our extra living room, our green little oasis. My little boy is especially interested in this part and has quite a green thumb. He even collects seeds from fruit and plants them around our garden in the hope that we will one day have an orchard.

Then out comes the table that has been stored in the winter months and meals are enjoyed together under the sunshine. At first it’s just for lunch but as the days grow longer and warmer, most of our meals are shared here and we are joined by the sounds of our neighbours doing the same.

Farmers market

No longer do we feel the need to stay cocooned in bed on the weekend morning, we tend to get up a little earlier than in the cooler months and visit the many farmers markets to stock up on fresh produce.

Weekends away are frequent, usually in a simple bach, something that is so accessible in the Auckland surrounds. Each day usually includes a long walk in the nature.

One thing is for certain, there’s always a smile on my face in springtime, it’s the season that offers so much hope and many promises for good times ahead.

I’m so happy for you that Spring is finally upon you. I can so idengtify with that feeling of hope. I bdo have to admit, although I love September, and we’re having quite an indian summer, I struggle with the thought of darker evenings, colder days and much rain.

Summer has bene glorious and that makes the transition so much harder….
    your kids are divine:-) xx

Beautiful post, Mel. The photos are so innocent of your children and really shows the joy they radiate. Living in AZ we don’t really have a Spring season, it always seems to go from freezing cold to hotter than an oven. I can appreciate all seasons for their unique gifts yet I will say Spring is a magical time of year with the air changing and becoming clear along with the new flowers bursting from the ground. Wishing you a sunny day inside and out, Jocelyn xx

Mel, it’s so fun to see the different seasons in our different parts of the world, as we’re heading into autumn here, it’s nice to know the warm sunshine will be moving somewhere beautiful. We’re buying winter coats, and looking at warming recipes for winter soups and casseroles. I enjoy the darker evenings when we can hunker down with a bottle of red wine and the fire crackling, but I don’t enjoy the dark mornings and frosty cars. Enjoy the sunshine and I’ll definitely visit Anastasia and Catherine, a lovely idea to share a theme x

Gorgeous photos Mel…..the ones of your children remind me of ours racing around the garden picking all the pops of colour that have recently sprouted, living me with not much for the house! But they are so happy being outside, barefoot and sun shining down on their gorgeous little bodies! Such happy days. I love your outdoor table too! Such character… enjoy springtime in Auckland and the warmer weather too x

Thanks Kylie. Isn’t it the best time of year and I too love seeing the kids outside playing… I’ll be heading to Sydney at the end of the week so I think we’ll certainly be feeling the warmer weather, Auckland tends to start a little later. M x

Spring is just a wonderful time of the year, it’s so nice to see the sunshine and get up a little bit earlier than in winter and visit Farmer’s Markets and the like. Your photos are fabulous Mel, well done even though the weather wasn’t very Spring like in Auckland on the weekend! xx
