Garden Objects Online Store

The other week I had the pleasure of visiting the home and workspace of Lisa and Jared, of the gorgeous and recently opened online store, Garden Objects.

Like all good visits, it started with a friendly cuppa and a good old chat. The two had just recently arrived in Auckland. Jared, a Kiwi has been living in London for the past twelve years. After he and Lisa visited a couple of years ago, they flirted with the idea of moving to Jared’s homeland to settle. It became a reality when they had the brilliant idea of opening a concept store dedicated to all things garden. They packed up most of their belongings, including their (adorable) British cat Bertie, and started a new life here.

Not only was there a gap in the market for such a store, the idea was a perfect fit for Jared, who is a landscape gardener. They hope to one day expand their business to bricks and mortar, where Jared will have a studio at the back of the store.

Because of my rental situation, I’m not a huge gardener right now, although I can’t help but feeling inspired when I look through their edit of garden wares. There’s a stunning range of artisan tools and equipment, all made to last and you wouldn’t mind leaving around the house and garden because they look amazing!

It’s not all for the avid outdoor gardener; they have many beautiful objects for inside the home including their coveted ceramic planter collection, which starts from the tiny to the enormous. The small Gidon Bing planters with tripod legs are made by pushing a teaspoon through the base, “Gidon’s daughter did this by mistake while playing and he liked it, so it stayed and became part of his collection,” Lisa told me.

Their rented home has such a lovely laid back airy feel with mid-century design elements such as a pair of Harry Bertoia Bird Chairs, finished with a sheepskin draped over. Objects from their store are dotted throughout, so you can tell that their wares are a true representation of their everyday esthetic.

Along with that, are stories of their life that they’ve gathered over the years. The table and workboxes in the hall was once Lisa’s grandmothers, and the boxes still have all her sewing things inside. Jared’s treasured and rare botanists book, dates the 1700’s and was found at Portobella Road market, in London. He also keeps rocks and crystals from various jobs on the windowsill.

When I mentioned how much I loved their Bonsai beside the window. Jared laughed at himself and told me that he’s training it to become a tree. And so is the great easy going vibe that you get from a couple that will inspire a new generation of New Zealanders to see all things garden in a new way.
