With the warmer weather setting in, I made an impromptu trip to the garden centre yesterday to stock up on seedlings for round two of our edible container garden. Last year the entire family had great pleasure from picking our food from the deck and we couldn’t wait to get it going again. While I’d love to have a huge patch in the garden, we can’t, because we rent, but it’s quite amazing how much you can harvest from pots.
When I was walking around the garden centre, I realised how happy it made me. My friend calls it a therapist without the cost, and I have to agree with her. While I love plants in the home, I’m not very good in “keeping a garden” as such, however growing food is a completely different story. It’s one of those simple pleasures. Last year we grew lettuce, tomatoes, lemon and a bunch of herbs. This year, I’m expanding a little more and adding courgettes and Lebanese cucumbers to the mix.
The kids got involved with the planting; Lou happy in her muddy Elsa dress, and after getting their hands a little dirty, the boys couldn’t resist the idea of pretending the deck wasa stage and performed to Michael Jackson while I finished up. Take note of the trees behind me – by late summer they will be full of feijoas!
I planted six lettuce that grows quickly and with leaves that can be harvested as needed, along with some rocket. Last year the rocket didn’t go so well and we ended up with only four heads of lettuce, yet it still produced up to two large salads a week, so I’m hoping this year it will be the same, if not more.
Like last year, I have a couple of variety of tomatoes and added an extra plant. There’s nothing like the taste of home grown and I remember how difficult it was to go back to store bought at the end of the season. I’m really looking forward to what these lovely flowers will produce!
Do you grow your own veggies? Or perhaps this year you’re considering doing if for the first time?
Here’s sunny days and edible container garden happiness!

Hi Mel, how wonderful that you grow your own food! I can’t wait till the weather warms up again on this side of the world so I can get started on growing some more. I hope you are well. xD
It’s such a great thing, I wish I could do more! Hope you’re well too Doris xx
I don’t know where to start, yours is such a lovely blog – I have serious style envy! I now have the urge to discard and/or rearrange.
Thank you so much Lesley, so lovely for you to visit and leave such a nice comment. You’ve made my day. xx
