Something that I always wish for is to have more places to display things in the home. I don’t like clutter so have quite a few things packed away in various boxes and drawers. Organised storage is not my forte! I find it really frustrating to not be able to put them all out on show, because I love these things. Then the other day while I was doing my kitchen revamp I had a thought. I had neglected the area and placed a whole bunch of things that I love on the windowsill and didn’t know what to do with. Clutter disaster! With this restyle I had no choice but to store things away. In the process I pulled something out of the storage box that I had forgotten about and was perfect for the new look… It feels good; it feels almost as if I’ve brought something new home!
I do tend to move things around a bit but usually rearrange what I already have out. Ideally I’d have a cupboard where I could store everything that I’m not using with easy access to view so that I can make choices for the new edit. I’d then spend a day or weekend moving frames and objects around, bring new things out of the box, putting others away for a while. Doing this, you get to do a true edit. I remember Megan Morton telling us in her Styling Masterclass that half of the job of a stylist is removing things from the frame.
Rearranging things feels so good and brings so much good energy into a room, kind of like that feeling of satisfaction you get when you move into a new home and finally feeling like you’ve completed a room when you hang that last picture on the wall. I’d put it down to good Feng Shui.
So this is my intention. To get myself a good couple of solid boxes (until I get that cupboard), and store all of my decorative items together. I’m going to call it a home prop box for the stylist within. Each time I’m feeling the need for a refresh, I’ll get them out and see what I can work with. Most of all, I won’t be afraid to store things that I love, because I know that I will see them again soon and with a new eye. This also eliminates the risk of clutter, which tends to happen when you’re too afraid to get rid of things you love, like my old kitchen windowsill. Side note here: Clutter, when done intentionally and with flare can look amazing – think Kara Rosenlund and Sibella Court!
So what do you think, are you ready to put things away for a little while?

Hi Mel
Totally agree with you! It’s amazing what a little shuffling and moving around can do for the soul! I’m just back from Maison in Paris which was fab! And bought a gorgeous felted leaf style mat (tricky to describe, but very lovely) made in Nepal. It was perfect for my acrylic unit, as I’ve been worried my boys woul scratch it with their clutter (lego, keys etc)!! So now I have the new mat, and have moved a succulent and vase and I love it! Not sure my boys get my excitement, but hey ho! Thanks again, love checking into your posts! x:)
Just started a little prop box of my own. As I was decluttering in a very big way (that dream of moving to a smaller home), I realised it left me with very little styling props. *facepalm* So your post is a very good reminder not to get rid of everything I can’t display, keeping it in one place is helpful too. Market season is starting here soon so looking forward to filling up that prop box ;)
I think it’s a great way to handle the excess of decorative items – something we design bloggers seem to suffer of hahaha. My only problem is: I do not have any space to put more boxes. There you go – it’s clutter-disaster-styling-hell-trap! Hahahahahaha.
Thank you for this helpful post, Mel. I instantly shared it on my fb site and I’ll definitely have my own prop box for the stylist within.
What a great idea!
