One of the good things about moving three times in two years is that each time has been an opportunity for me to turf things. I’ve been spending the last couple of weekends sorting through all of those places that tend to accumulate stuff. You know where I’m talking about, I’m sure you’ve got some yourself; the laundry, the attic, the garage, the wardrobe and in my case, the desk that closes and is full of paperwork!
Yesterday we finished the last of the clear out and I now have two boxes of old paperwork to shred and transferred the remaining, along with the rest of the paperwork that needed filing into brand spanking new fabric lever-arch files. Oh it felt so good to offload all of that paper!
We’ve also created a ginormous pile of toys and clothes to give to charity, we’ve made some nice pocket money by selling all of our baby stuff and heaters on Trade Me (NZ version of Ebay) and of course there’s the vintage Scandi style chair giveaway that I did – the fun part!
It feels so great to have lightened the load with the de-clutter and it will make it a lot easier to find a place for everything at the other end of the move on Friday. I still can’t believe how much stuff we had and wonder what it would have been like had we not moved all of these times?
If you’ve been living in your home for some time and are feeling a little motivated to do something about it, there’s a tonne of information out there about the art of de-cluttering and getting organised. If you don’t know where to start, Peter Walsh is the king of organisation, he’s a little bit over the top but he has loads of great tips and a plan for de-cluttering your home in bite size chunks.
The little act actually does wonders to your life; it frees up time, can earn you money and clears up the overall energy of a home as explained in feng shui for a harmonious home.
So, would you dedicate a weekend or two to de-cluttering? Are you a hoarder? Do you think that we just fill our lives with unnecessary stuff?
Mel x
I totally relate to this post! This is exactly one of the things I look forward to: unclutter my home, when moving (hopefully still) this year. It makes me feel good, just so much lighter! xx
Isn’t it wonderful? I’m spending more than a weekend, I’ve been at it for a month and probably will be until our yard sale a the end of June. But I’m going pretty extreme, like http://www.theminimalists.com style. And I couldn’t be happier. :-)
Your move will be so much easier!
Wow, thanks for the link, I just had a quick look and can’t wait to read more. Good luck with it all Christina, I’d love to hear how the car boot sale goes! M x
Can totally relate. Went on a de-clutering phase being 8 months pregnant and we spend an entire weekend getting rid of a huge amount of paperwork we hadn’t sorted being moving the last time. It felt really great :)
@ Catherine – thank you, I’m looking forward to it all being over!x
@ Anastasia – Good on you! Good luck on Sunday and control yourself, I know it’s hard because you find so many treasures there.x
@Corinne – Oh I remember that well. I also filled my freezer with loads of meals, which I didn’t realise at the time how much I needed to do it! x
Ive been decluttering too Mel – only because it makes me feel good and makes my home feel organised and serene. Ive booked to do a car boot type sale at a local flea market this Sunday …hope I don’t spend all the money I make on more clutter!…love flea markets! Ha!
Goodluck with the move!
Hi Mel, well done for getting to the end of your decluttering! It’s so liberating. Good luck with the move on Friday.
I am on a decluttering mission! I think mine is going to take longer than a couple of weekends though! So looking forward to creating more space!
Oh good luck Kate, you’ll feel great for it I promise!
