True to Scandinavian design,  Finnish designer, Anna Palomaa works very much with functionality and experimental as the backbone to her objects. While she works in many different facets of design and ceramics, I’m particularly interested in her use of reindeer hide.

I just love the playful form of the Toini light which is part of her Circus themed series of lights. Look closer and you might see that the shade is actually coloured Reindeer leather stretched over a steel frame.

Anna and fellow designer Katriina Nuutinen have used two trends of the moment, the use of Finnish marine rope to make the Nietos carpet with the macramé technique for a stunning effect.

The Kuru tableware set is inspired by the culture of the Sami people in Laplan, where Anna was born. The four plates and cups are stackable on top of one another. They also have the ability to be transported in a net bag that’s made of reindeer leather. The thermos bottle, a combination of glass and cork to enjoy a hot or cold drink and the reindeer leather pouches are to store coffee and tea to take along with you.

Indoor swings are such a lovely idea and one that I keep wishing I had a place for in our home. I had to include the minimalist design of Syli with luxurious soft reindeer leather to sit into.

Anna is also one of the founding members of Helsinki based design group Kaamos, which showcases a bunch of talented Finnish designers.  I’d love to see some of her work represented over this side of the world.

What utter beautiful work and so delicate.

I LOVE the reindeer leather net bag. What an intriguing combination.
I’ve wanted a swing like ‘forever’. But unfortunately I don’t have the space.

Thank you for the introduction. I do think Finnish deisgn is overshadowed but the Danes and Swedes:-) xx
